Whew, it is hot, hot, hot here in the Holy City!
And, for some delicious relief from the heat, we thought we would share with our clients and friends a recipe which has been a summer mainstay in Saida’s family for four generations. With thanks to grandmother Miss Ferdie who lived and entertained “South of Broad” her entire life, here it is:
Charleston’s Coolest Cucumber Soup
1 pound cucumbers peeled and cut up
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 carton of sour cream
1/4 onion chopped
Salt and worcestire sauce to taste
Mix in blender and Chill. Add a sprig of dill or parsley if desired.
Serves 4. Ahhh!
Of course in Miss Ferdie’s day, they didn’t have lowfat soup or sour cream, so this was a pretty rich dish. If anyone tries it with the lower fat ingredients, please let us know how it is.
If you like this recipe and want to see more, let us know that too.
Happy Summer and stay cool!!!

As a Valentine’s gift to all of our friends and fans of Keystocharlestonrealestate.com, Saida would like to share another of her grandmother’s special recipes. As Miss Ferdie alway said, “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” but you men out there can try your hand at this easy and delicious recipe too and watch your beloved swoon!
Gibbes Street Chocolate Ice Box Cake
Melt chocolate, sugar and water in a double boiler. Add 5 egg yolks one at a time. Cool. In a separate bowl beat the egg whites. Add to the cooled chocolate mixture. Line a serving bowl with lady fingers and pour half of the mixture over the lady fingers. Whip the cream with the sugar. Layer whipped cream and then chocolate, finishing with whipped cream on top. Sprinkle with red sugar for a Valentine’s touch.
Please send us an email at info@keystocharlestonrealestate.com with photos and tell us what your Valentine thought of this desert! We look forward to hearing from you!!

Try this luxury hot crab dip at you next get together!!!
Since it ’tis the season to be jolly, Saida would like to share a southern recipe and a story with our clients and friends:
“My grandmother Ferdinand Williams Alexander grew up on lower King Street in the early 1900’s. Known as “Ferdie”, my grandmother was a legend in her own time and even in our time. She was the best cook in Charleston! Miss Ferdie made cakes for the church bazaar, she made pickles for friends at Christmas and she made custard for sick family members and friends. She never stopped cooking-even when she was bedridden in her 80’s, Miss Ferdie would call out cooking, pickling and baking instructions from her bedroom to me, the cook or anyone who would listen. One of my most beloved possessions is a tattered and water stained file folder that holds my grandmother’s recipes. It survived Hurricane Hugo and I expect it will survive the next one.
Here is a favorite holiday recipe that is perfect for entertaining:
Company Crab Spread
- 8 oz. cream cheese-softened
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 oz. cheddar cheese-grated
- Juice of one pressed clove of garlic
- 1 teaspoon Worchestershire sauce
- 6 oz. crab meat-fresh or canned (drained)
- Pepper to taste
- Lemon to taste
Mix and serve with crackers or melba toast. Don’t forget to garnish with a sprig of parsley.
